Contact lenses and pool water do not mix, and training without clear vision affects every turn, every interval and every read of the pace clock. Prescription swimming goggles solve that straightforwardly - the improvement in pool awareness and turn precision is usually more noticeable from the first session than most swimmers expect when they first try them. Available for men and women across a range of optical strengths and nose bridge widths suited to different face shapes and correction requirements. Allens Swimwear is an authorised UK stockist for every brand. Browse by gender: men's prescription goggles or women's prescription goggles.

Who Should Use Prescription Swimming Goggles

Any swimmer whose distance vision requires correction outside the pool should consider prescription goggles for pool use. The vision tasks that matter in swimming, reading the pace clock, sighting the lane ropes and the wall, tracking other swimmers in a busy lane, all require distance vision. A swimmer operating without their correct distance correction is making every one of those tasks harder than it needs to be.

Swimmers who currently use contact lenses under standard goggles are managing the issue, but with a risk that prescription goggles remove. Contact lens displacement or loss under a failed goggle seal is particularly problematic in competition and open water settings. Prescription goggles provide consistent vision correction without the management overhead of contact lens pool use.

How the Optical Correction Works

Prescription swimming goggles replace the standard flat polycarbonate lens with a plano-convex or plano-concave optical insert manufactured to a specific dioptre strength. This insert corrects short-sightedness (myopia) by refracting light before it enters the eye, producing a sharper image at distance. The correction is fixed at manufacture and cannot be adjusted.

Available corrections typically run from -1.5 to -8.0 in increments, covering the range required by the majority of myopic swimmers. Your optician prescription gives your distance sphere correction as an SPH value. Where your prescription falls between two available strengths, the closer value is the right starting point. A half-dioptre undercorrection is usually preferable to overcorrection in the pool, as it produces less visual fatigue over longer sessions.

Men's Women's Options

We stock men's and women's prescription swimming goggles from Speedo Arena. Men's and women's models use the frame geometry of each brand's corresponding fitness goggle range, meaning the seal and comfort characteristics are consistent with the non-prescription versions of the same models. If you currently use a specific Speedo or Arena fitness goggle and find it comfortable, the prescription variant of that model will provide a comparable fit experience.

Browse our men's prescription goggles and women's prescription goggles collections for gender-specific options, or contact our swimwear experts if you need guidance on dioptre availability or model compatibility with your specific prescription.

Goggle Fit Still Matters

Prescription goggles seal on the same principles as standard goggles. A goggle that does not seal correctly on your face will not provide clear vision, because water entry obscures the corrective lens. Press the goggle against your eye socket without the strap attached and check for suction hold before committing to a purchase. Our swimwear experts can advise on model fit before you buy.

Prescription Goggles Versus Contact Lenses for Swimming

Contact lens use in pools is generally not recommended by opticians. Pool water introduces microorganisms that can bind to soft contact lens material, and a failed goggle seal can cause lens displacement or, in rare cases, eye infections. Prescription goggles eliminate this risk entirely. For open water swimmers, the risk associated with contact lens use is higher than in pools due to the greater microbial load in natural water - prescription goggles are the safer choice for any open water swimmer who requires vision correction.

Prescription Goggles for Regular Training Use

Prescription goggles are available in fitness goggle frame styles as well as dedicated racing frames. For regular training use, a prescription fitness goggle provides session-length comfort with the optical correction of a prescription lens. The frame geometry on Speedo Arena prescription fitness models is consistent with their non-prescription equivalents - if a specific non-prescription model fits your face, the prescription variant will provide the same fit.

Selecting Between Speedo Arena Prescription Models

Speedo prescription goggles suit a wider range of face profiles. Arena prescription goggles suit female facial proportions with a shorter inter-ocular distance particularly well. Allens Swimwear stocks prescription swimming goggles for swimmers who need vision correction in the water.

Swimming without clear vision means missing the wall, losing your lane, and finishing sessions with a headache. Prescription swimming goggles solve that, and at Allens Swimwear, we stock prescription goggles across multiple brands, with a range of lens strengths to suit different prescriptions. Unlike standard goggles, prescription goggles come in fixed lens strengths rather than exact prescriptions, so knowing your approximate correction is the starting point.

As a family-run business since 1976, we are one of the UK's specialist swimwear retailers to offer prescription goggles across multiple brands, including Speedo, Hilco, View and Swans.

We are an authorised UK stockist for every prescription goggle brand we carry. That means every product is authentic and supplied through authorised channels.
