Swimming Fins

Swimming fins are one of the pieces of training equipment included in every swimmer's bag. From competitive swimmers to beginners, swimmers of all levels use fins to improve technique and enhance speed and power in the water.

Choosing the Right Swimming Fins

Types of Swim Fins

There are several types of swim fins that can be used as part of your training regime, each serving a particular purpose and offering unique benefits. When deciding which swim fin type to choose, consider the specific goals and needs of your swim training. We offer the following swimming fins:

  • Long Blade Fins: these fins help with endurance focused swimming and building lower body strength. The long blade provides a larger surface area, moving more water and requiring less energy to maintain your speed compared to short blade fins.
  • Short Blade Fins: Shorter swim fins are ideal for sprint type training, where more effort is required to maintain your speed. Short blade fins are less flexible and more stiffer compared to long blade fins.

Fins Sizes for Adults and Kids

Properly selecting your swimming fin size is paramount in reaching the maximum benefits with your swim fins and preventing discomfort or even injury. Swim fins must be snug but not too tight, which may cause discomfort or blistering. We have stock in adult and kids' sizes to accommodate all different foot lengths.

Our swimming fins sizes are based on UK shoe sizes. Please refer to our fin size guide for Europe, USA and Australian sizes.

Some brands may have slightly different size guidelines, so please refer to the brand-specific size chart for the exact product sizing before placing your order on our site.

Benefits of Swim Fins

When you use training swim fins, you can increase your speed and endurance in swimming without easily getting tired. There are so many advantages of swimming fins, which include improved upper and lower body strength, such as stronger ankles and calf muscles because of the resistance and improved flexibility since your mobility increases with the use of swimming flippers.

Swimming flippers also help with your swimming technique including a range of swim exercises:

  1. Flutter Kicks - Using fins can help to increase the intensity and effectiveness of flutter kicks by providing additional resistance.
  2. Dolphin Kicks - Fins aid in enhancing the strength and speed of dolphin kicks, making them more powerful.
  3. Freestyle Drills - Incorporating fins can improve various freestyle drills, helping with body position and propulsion.
  4. Backstroke Kicking - Fins can significantly boost the speed and endurance of your backstroke kicks.
  5. Vertical Kicking - By adding fins, vertical kicking drills become more challenging, effectively building leg strength.
  6. Underwater Kicking - Fins assist in practicing efficient and swift underwater kicks, crucial for improving overall swim speed.
  7. Kickboard Drills - When combined with a kickboard, fins enhance kicking drills by increasing resistance and improving technique.

These exercises not only benefit from the added resistance and propulsion provided by swim fins, but they also help in improving overall swimming technique and endurance.

We also have swim fins with shortened flippers that come with a number of benefits to your training program. These swim fins are designed to help increase your speed so you can swim much more at a competitive speed with less effort. This allows your body to become accustomed to faster speeds, achieving quicker movements with your arms and legs by exerting less effort and strain from swimming without the use of fins.

Other major benefits include increased leg strength and flexibility. You are flexing and extending your feet beyond their normal range of motion by wearing fins, increasing flexibility. Your ankles also become more flexible due to working harder to kick with the fins. Greater water resistance results from the increased surface area of your feet while wearing fins, and with the increased resistance, the legs have to work harder to propel you through the water, making them stronger. Swim fins also provide buoyancy, which helps you to maintain a better overall body position in the water, facilitating swimming at a faster pace and further than before.

All these benefits will come into play positively on the race day. If you include them in your regular swimming routine, then training fins can make you an effective and speedy swimmer.

How to Use Swimming Fins

When putting them on, sit at the edge of the pool and glide your feet into the fins, making sure that the heels and toes are properly aligned. When in the water, you will have to maintain your body position streamlined. To do this, keep your head down, arms stretched in front, and tighten the core.

Start with a small, easy kick just to get the feel of the resistance and buoyancy the fins present. Increase the strength of the kick, but not to big, jerky movements. Try to work small, even movements to help you keep a good rhythm and not tire quickly. Another important thing is to remember to keep full movement in your ankles; the fins should naturally flex with every kick. Add drills and sets that highlight different techniques, like the flutter kick or dolphin kick, to get the most out of your training session.

Care of Your Swim Fins

Rinse your swim fins with fresh water every time you use them to remove the chlorine or salt. Allow them to air dry and store them in a cool, dry place. Follow these steps to keep your swim fins effective and durable and long lasting.
